When visiting the hustle and bustle of central Tokyo, it can be easy to forget that peaceful, spiritual retreats sit right in the shadow of the city's modern landmarks. Zojo-ji Temple (増上寺) is one of the most stunning examples of this contrast—a historic Buddhist temple complex with the bright red frame of Tokyo Tower rising directly behind it.
We spent a peaceful morning exploring Zojo-ji and the lush surrounding grounds. Here is our guide to experiencing this iconic Tokyo destination!

1. History & Importance

Founded as the main temple of the Jodo-shu (Pure Land) sect of Buddhism in the Kanto region, Zojo-ji became the family temple of the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo period. Six of the Tokugawa Shoguns are buried on the temple grounds, making it one of Japan's most historically significant religious sites.

2. Exploring the Temple Grounds

As you walk onto the expansive stone plaza, the main hall (Daiden) commands your attention []. Standing on the steps and looking up reveals the contrast between classical Japanese temple architecture and Tokyo Tower towering overhead [].
Key highlights to look for during your visit:

• Jizo Statue Garden: Rows of small Unborn Child Jizo statues adorned with red knitted caps, bibs, and colorful pinwheels spinning in the breeze [].
  
• Bonnsho (Great Bell): One of the Big Three bells of the Kanto region, housed in a massive wooden bell tower [].
  
• Incense Burner (Jokoro): Before entering the main hall, visitors bathe themselves in incense smoke for purification and good health [].
  

3. A Hidden Oasis Next Door: Momiji-dani (Maple Valley)

Just a short walk from the main temple complex lies Momiji-dani (Maple Valley) inside Shiba Park []. This quiet, shaded garden features:

• Winding streams with clear running water and small trickling waterfalls [].
  
• Lush greenery and traditional stone lanterns nestled along forested paths [].

2. Best Photography Spot: Stand near the base of the main steps looking up toward the Daiden for the framed shot with Tokyo Tower right behind it [].
   
3. Getting There: Located right next to Shiba Park, accessible via Onarimon Station (Mita Line), Daimon Station(Asakusa/Oedo Lines), or JR Hamamatsucho Station.
