All Aboard! Our First Train Ride in Japan: Yokosuka-Chuo to Kamakura

Taking on the transit system in a new country can feel like solving a giant puzzle, but today we officially earned our Japanese transit badges! We embarked on our very first train adventure, navigating the rails from Yokosuka-Chuo Station to the historic city of Kamakura.

Step 1: Getting Our PASMO Cards

Before even hitting the platforms, we had to sort out our transit cards. We decided to go with PASMO:

For the Adults: Digital PASMO cards loaded right onto Apple Wallet on our phones super convenient to tap and go!
For the Kids: Physical PASMO cards so they could tap through the turnstiles like pros.

Watching the kids scan their cards through the gates was half the fun!

Step 2: Riding the Keikyu Main Line

Our journey began at Yokosuka-Chuo Station on the red Keikyu Main Line (headed toward Yokohama/Shinagawa).

One of the coolest parts of riding Japanese trains, especially for the kids is peeking out the front or rear driver windows. Watching the conductor manage the controls, flying through mountain tunnels, and watching the tracks stretch ahead made the ride feel like a mini amusement park ride.

Step 3: Making the Transfer

To get all the way to Kamakura, we transferred from the Keikyu Main Line over to the JR Yokosuka Line. Station signage in Japan is remarkably clear with English translations and color-coded line symbols, making transfers seamless even for total beginners.

Step 4: Arriving in Historic Kamakura

Stepping off the train in Kamakura immediately felt like stepping into a blend of history and vibrant city life. As soon as we exited the station towards iconic spots like Tsurugaoka-Hachimangu Shrine and Kotoku-in Temple (Great Buddha), we were greeted by bright red Torii gates framing the bustling streets.

Quick Tips for First-Timers

Digital vs. Physical PASMO: Setting up digital transit cards on your phone ahead of time saves a lot of ticket kiosk standing!
Mind the Transfer: Pay attention to line transfers (like switching from Keikyu to JR), as you'll tap out of one system and tap into the next.
Front/Rear View: If you have kiddos with you, try to stand near the front or back windows of the train cars for an incredible view of the tracks and tunnels!
