Quick, Hot, and Delicious: Our Pepper Lunch Experience in Yokosuka, Japan

On our latest excursion around Yokosuka, we decided to pop into Pepper Lunch (横須賀中央店 / Yokosuka-Chuo location) to see what the sizzling hype was all about—and it did not disappoint!

What is Pepper Lunch?

For those unfamiliar, Pepper Lunch is a famous Japanese "DIY" casual steakhouse chain. The concept is simple but brilliant: your food arrives raw or partially cooked on a special electromagnetic iron plate that stays piping hot (heated up to nearly 500°F!).

As soon as the plate hits your table, it’s race time—you mix and stir-fry your meat, rice, toppings, and sauces directly on the hot plate right in front of you.

The Experience

We ordered one of their classic sizzling pepper rice plates, packed with:

Tender, thin-sliced beef around the rim

A mountain of seasoned rice topped with sweet corn and green onions

A freshly cracked egg sizzling away on the side

Watching the steam rise and listening to that loud, irresistible crackle as soon as it arrived was half the fun. We grabbed our spoons, chopped up the egg, mixed the beef until it was perfectly browned, and let the rice crisp up slightly against the hot iron bottom for that delicious extra crunch.

The Verdict

Every bite was packed with flavor—savory beef, sweet corn, savory garlic-pepper seasoning, and rich egg, all tied together with their special garlic soy sauces available at the table. It’s fast, budget-friendly, and standard Japanese comfort food at its best.
